The Slam Society is Northwestern University's open forum on performance poetry. We believe in "flashmob poetry" where audiences can manifest wherever there are poets. We rarely offer prizes for participating in our events, but we hope that by holding events for amateurs and veterans alike, sponsoring trips to poetry readings, and spreading spoken word appreciation the poets among us can perform to welcoming audiences and develop their talents.
We hold our events across Northwestern's campus without the use of any sound amplification. Everyone is invited to perform at our open mics. Judges are randomly selected for our poetry slams and we encourage anyone interested to compete.
The very word 'poetry' repels people. Why is that? Because of what schools have done to it. The slam gives it back to the people.... We need people to talk poetry to each other. That's how we communicate our values, our hearts, the things that we've learned that make us who we are.- Marc Smith
