About

The Slam Society started at Northwestern University in the Fall of 2009. We follow a "flashmob poetry" philosophy where poets perform wherever an audience can form.

Locations of Events include:

  • The Rock
  • Shakespeare Garden
  • Tech Entrance
  • Library Plaza
  • Courtyard under Kresge
  • Cahn Courtyard
  • Outside Pick-Staiger
  • The Lakefill

The Slam Society was created with the primary mission to let poets read to audiences. Fostering workshops, holding competitions, and sending a team to Nationals are secondary to giving poets on campus a place and an audience to perform. Our events incorporate any combination of an open mic, a Slam, and a trip to a poetry reading in the Chicagoland area.

Before there was writing, there was the human voice that created words... By becoming a partner with the poet, writing the poem yourself, you are given the tools to physicalize that understanding of the poem... A poet is never anyone but her or himself.
